Independence day of Uganda

Independence day of Uganda

Today Marks The 60th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Uganda

Today, October 9, Uganda celebrates its independence from the British colonizer. The country fell under the influence of this colonization for the first time in 1890, when Britain and Germany signed a treaty to settle their colonial ambitions that resulted in Britain granting rights in the region. By 1894, the British government had annexed Buganda and some surrounding areas to create the Uganda Protectorate.

The Ugandan people, led by the king, started to resist this colonization, and this resistance and popular struggle intensified with the end of World War II and the weakening of British influence. As well as the call for independence at this time began to sweep across Africa, and many British territories in the region sought independence.

On October 9th, 1962, Uganda gained its independence as a democratic, parliamentary monarchy. In the following year, Uganda became a republic, and Buganda's King Mutesa II became the country's first president.
