On this very day 47 years ago, the Republic of Cape Verde gained its independence
The Republic of Cape Verde gained its independence from the Portuguese colonialism on July 5, 1975. The Portuguese occupied the Cape Verde islands in the mid-15th century. In 1951, the country was no longer a colony, it became a Portuguese province.
The liberation movement in Cape Verde has been linked to other Portuguese lands in the region such as Guinea-Bissau. In 1956, Amílcar Cabral created the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), in an attempt to improve the economic, social and political conditions in both countries, as well as to form liberation movements seeking decolonization.
After Guinea Bissau has gained independence in 1973, Cape Verde's demands for independence increased, until it gained its independence on July 5, 1975.
