From the early years, people started to resist colonialism, and the popular struggle increased with the beginning of the 1915 uprising, led by John Chilembwe. The Nyasaland Congress Party was formed in 1944, which later bacame the Malawi Congress Party, to mobilize people against the occupation and start the struggle for independence.
In July 1960, Britain allowed the establishment of a Legislative Council in Nyasaland. In the country's first local elections, President Hastings Banda's party achieved great success, and on July 6th, 1964, Nyasaland became the independent state of Malawi. Hastings Banda became the prime minister of the country, and two years later, he became president of the republic, as Malawi adopted the republican system in 1966 and officially became the Republic of Malawi
