International Nelson Mandela Day:   honouring world influential people

"To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." Nelson Mandela 

Coinciding with the anniversary of his birth, the  International Day of Nelson Mandela comes as a  recognition by the United Nations of  Mandela's contributions to consolidating the concepts of justice and freedom. The day commemorates  Mandela's values ​​and dedication to serving humanity, in the areas of conflict resolution and reconciliation, the promotion of gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups. Moreover, the day  honours his struggle for democracy at the international level and the promotion of a culture of peace in various parts of the world. 

Sixty-seven years of struggle wrere spent by Nelson Mandela, the former President of the Republic of South Africa, as a  defender of human rights, a prisoner of proclaiming the truth, a peacemaker, standing in the face of tyranny, and  a servant of humanity. 

Therefore, according to its resolution A/RES/64/13 in 2009,  the United Nations General Assembly has considered  the eighteenth of July as the Nelson Mandela International Day. The resolution aims at  enhancing the social responsibility of individuals towards their societies, and their ability to make a change in it for the better, as Mandela Day inspires everyone to work and change. The resolution should give us the  opportunity to reflect on the legacy of a legendary global fighter defending dignity and  
championing  the values ​​of human solidarity and human unity.

Finally, “We can change the world and make it a better place.” Nelson Mandela, the legendary leader(1918-2013)
