The first day of “Nasser International Leadership” Fellowship Cohort 2 concluded with a discussion session on “Egypt’s Digital Transformation Strategy”. This fellowship is organized -under the theme “South-South Cooperation”- by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, chaired by Dr Ashraf Sobhi, in cooperation with the National Training Academy, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other national institutions. It is held under the auspices of His Excellency President of the Arab Republic of Egypt/ Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and is scheduled to last until 15 June. Some distinguished youth leaders from Asia, Africa and Latin America are participating in the Nasser Fellowship.

 

The closing session entitled “Egypt’s Digital Transformation Strategy” was moderated by Dr. Nezar Sami, Innovation and Technology Advisor. The session was attended by Dr Khalid Al-Attar, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Digital Transformation, Nagwa Salah, Undersecretary and Head of the Central Administration of Cultural and Voluntary Programs at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hassan Ghazali, Coordinator-General of the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership, some officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and a group of media professionals and journalists.

 

On behalf of Dr Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of youth and Sports, Nagwa Salah, Head of the Central Administration of Cultural and Voluntary Programs, began her statement by conveying the greeting of the Minister of Youth and Sports to the participants, expressing the Minister’s eagerness to meet with them in this event. She welcomed the delegations of the three continents to Egypt, their second home, expressing her happiness at being among a group of distinguished young leaders from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Nasser Fellowship Second Edition is held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports amidst many challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, namely the flight conditions and others.  However, the political leadership in Egypt continuously support the process of rapprochement between the peoples of the world, thereby benefiting young leaders from various countries of the world through the convergence of proposals, information, initiatives and constructive youth projects.

 

 

 

She also explained that the participants’ visit to the Gamal Abdel Nasser Museum -organized on the first day of the Fellowship- was extremely important to introduce them to the life and struggle of the late leader who lived his life serving Arabism, the brown continent, and humanity as a whole. Nagwa praised the Fellowship’s Task Force, headed by Mr Hassan Ghazali/ Coordinator -General of the Fellowship, for their organized efforts, making the fellowship worthy to be named after the late leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. She also applauded the outstanding efforts carried out by all the partners of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the implementation of this fellowship.

 

In his speech at the closing session, Dr Khalid Al-Attar, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Digital Transformation, addressed Egypt’s role in digital transformation, noting that H.E. President of the Arab Republic of Egypt/ Abdel Fattah El-Sisi pays great attention to the dossier of digital transformation and the formulation of the digital native. This contributed to the development of Egypt's experience in this regard, in light of the State's many digital initiatives aimed at building the Egyptian character. He noted that the whole world was striving, given the current circumstances, to reach the highest professional rates in digital transformation and reach digital-based societies in various aspects of life, to achieve development and progress.

 

Al-Attar added that artificial intelligence technology -which is a complement to the human mind- is a necessity nowadays. He explained that that the main reason for making use of digital technology in any region of the world was to improve the citizen’s quality of life by improving their living conditions and providing multiple online services, especially since jobs in the coming period will turn to cognitive functions.

 

The Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Digital Transformation reviewed, during his speech, Egypt’s digital transformation strategy, which aims to enable the government, the citizen and various industries to sustainably use digital technology. This is done through the creation of a connected, participatory and sustainable digital government centred on the citizens’ needs to increase Egypt’s competitive capacities. He then explained the goals of digital transformation in Egypt and presented Egypt’s experience in digital transformation by showcasing the work of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to promote the development of ICT infrastructure in Egypt. He mentioned that the key objective was to improve digital services in various institutions, especially the performance of Egypt’s ministries and bodies, and to raise the quality of services by improving the work environment, providing support for the decision-making process and finding solutions to societal issues.

 

At the end of his speech, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology called on the participants to learn about the safe use of social media to ensure privacy and maintain user confidentiality, while remaining on the positive side of modern technology.

 

The participants, at the end of the closing session, asked Dr Khalid Al-Attar about Egypt’s digital transformation strategy. This discussion was moderated by Dr Nezar Sami, Innovation and Technology Advisor. The participants presented their inputs, questions, visions, experiences, projects and various proposals on digital transformation. They then took a group photo with Dr Nezar and Dr Khalid. Everyone was extremely pleased with this remarkable open discussion.

 

The Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership builds on Egypt’s ongoing efforts -following its chairmanship of the African Union for the year 2019- to strengthen the African youth role by providing them with all forms of support, habilitation and training, in addition to empowering them to occupy leadership positions, in order to capitalize on their capacities and insights. It is also one of the executive mechanisms of the following: Egypt Vision 2030 -10 principles of the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization -Africa Agenda 2063 -Sustainable Development Goals 2030 -South - South Cooperation -African Union Roadmap on Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth -African Youth Charter.

 

The Nasser Leadership Fellowship -1st Cohort was launched in June 2019 under the auspices of Prime Minister Dr Mostafa Madbouly, targeting young African executive leaders from different professional disciplines within their own communities, with the objective of popularizing Egypt’s development experience in institution/national character building.
