The 47th anniversary of the independence of Comoros from France

On this day, July 6th, 1975, Comoros gained independence from France. The islands fell under full French control in 1913 and officially became a French colony. By 1972, the demand for independence increased with the presence of opposition parties, which had started their activities strongly against colonialism

After negotiations with France, a referendum was held in 1974, in the four main islands of the country (Anjouan, Moheli, Mayotte, and Grande Comore). Three islands voted for independence with 95%, while Mayotte voted against independence with 63.8%, and preferred to remain  Under French rule, because it has a large percentage of foreigners.

On July 6th, 1975, the Comoros Parliament issued a unilateral decision declaring the country's independence, and Comoros gained its independence, except Mayotte, which remained under French rule.
