Marwa Alameldeen: A Leader in Sustainable Development and Gender Equality

Since December 2023, Marwa Alameldeen has been serving as Acting Head of Programmes at the UN Women office in Egypt, where she continues to lead a range of initiatives and projects aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women in Egyptian society. Marwa is recognized as one of the region’s prominent experts in sustainable development, with over 15 years of experience in designing and managing strategic programs and development partnerships at both regional and international levels.

Before joining the United Nations, Marwa worked within the UN Resident Coordinator system, focusing on inter-agency coordination, partnerships, and resource mobilization for development. Her national and global experience in this field enabled her to strengthen cooperation among diverse stakeholders in the international community to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

She brings deep expertise in democratic governance, human rights, and gender equality across the Middle East and North Africa region. Marwa has led the design and implementation of numerous regional and national programs that aim to enhance democratic governance and protect human rights while supporting gender equality in several countries throughout the region. Prior to joining the UN, she served as Regional Programme Manager for Democratic Governance at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and also worked with the British Foreign Office and USAID in Egypt. These roles helped her build an extensive network of international partnerships.

Marwa holds a degree in Global Affairs from the American University in Cairo and a bachelor’s degree in International Business from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, reflecting her passion for developing sustainable solutions and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Through her ongoing commitment to sustainable development and gender equality, Marwa Alameldeen remains one of the leading female figures driving meaningful change in communities, advancing the UN’s vision of a more just and inclusive world.
