International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace
"I do not know an era in which the peoples of the world unanimously agreed on one goal, as they are now unanimously agreed upon, to make efforts to achieve an effective international order. Would we turn our aspirations into real certainty?"
President Gamal Abdel Nasser at the Bandung Conference, April 1955
In December 2018, the General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring the “International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace” (A/73/L.48) in a recorded vote of 144, and called on all Member States, observers and United Nations organizations to celebrate the International Day, in April 24 annually to raise awareness of the benefits of pluralism and diplomacy for peace.
In addition to highlighting the importance of preserving the values of pluralism and international cooperation, upon which the United Nations Charter and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are based, as a basis for supporting and strengthening the three pillars of the United Nations - development, human rights and peace and security, as it is crucial to raise the curve of commitment to international standards, systems and the rules that have guided state relations for the past seven decades against isolationism and the growing challenges arising from it. For example, climate change, geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises in their various sectors, push towards finding settlements that respect the values and interests of nations, and that require attention and collective action through pluralism and diplomacy.
