Nasser Fellow from Sierra Leone Eric Kawa, Chosen for CNN Academy
Eric Kawa, a dedicated journalist hailing from Sierra Leone, has been selected as one of the 15 accomplished young journalists from the Global South to participate in the prestigious 2023 CNN Academy Climate Storytelling Program. Sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, the program aims to empower emerging journalists to shed light on the profound impact of the climate crisis within their respective home countries.
Commencing on November 28th and concluding on December 10th, 2023, the training program will provide participants with valuable insights and skills to create compelling narratives surrounding the climate crisis. At the program's culmination, Eric Kawa and his peers will collaborate to produce impactful short documentaries that spotlight the far-reaching consequences of the climate crisis.
Eric Kawa, a multilingual journalist based in Freetown, Sierra Leone, boasts a B.A. in Mass Communication from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. Serving as a correspondent for Africanews and collaborating with Capital Radio, Sierra Leone, Eric has also made significant contributions to China Global Television Network (CGTN) and The Voice of America (VOA).
Beyond his journalistic endeavors, Eric is the Owner/Producer of 'Weekly Splash' and '120 Seconds Countdown with Eric,' both youth-focused and educational programs. Additionally, he excels as a Voice Over Artist, Vlogger, and Event Host/Moderator.
Recognized as a fellow of the 3rd Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership (2022), the African Presidential Leadership Program (2020), and the British Council Future Newsworld (2021), Eric Kawa's commitment to excellence is further evidenced by his participation as a 2019 Delegate of the World Youth Forum. Notably, he was also part of a select team chosen to attend a radio training workshop for kids by Free Press Unlimited in 2015.
