Madagascar's Independence Day

Madagascar's Independence Day

On this day in 1960, Madagascar gained its full independence from France

The Kingdom of Madagascar was coveted by Britain and France for its important strategic location. In 1883, France invaded Madagascar and removed the reign of the Merina Kingdom. Madagascar then became a French colony in 1896. During the Second World War, the island was administered by the Vichy government of France which was fighting against the British who tried to gain control of the island at the time. The British troops succeeded to occupy Madagascar, but France regained power in 1943.

The actions of the French led to a growing call for independence, and the Madagascar uprising of 1947 erupted, which forced the French to establish reform institutions in 1956 to suppress popular anger and reduce violence and insurrection. Madagascar began to move towards independence, and on October 14th 1958, the Republic of Madagascar was declared an autonomous state within the French Community. After the Constitution was adopted in 1959, the Republic of Madagascar gained full independence on June 26th, 1960.
