Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership Academic Committee member within Egyptian Geographical Society Directors Board
The International Nasser Youth Movement extends its sincere congratulations to Prof. Dr. Attia El-Tantawy, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Higher African Studies, Cairo University, and a member of the Academic and Advisory Committee of the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership, on this great scholarly stature on the occasion of his election as a member of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Geographical Society. He is very much worthy of such position for we have always been drawn to this man’s vast knowledge, as we have benefited from his experiences and guidance in many of our programmes.
It is noteworthy that the Egyptian Geographical Society is one of the edifices of modern Egypt, and one of the oldest geographical societies in the world. It was established by Khedive Decree in 1875 as the oldest geographical society outside Europe and the Americas. The first issue of its scientific journal was in French in 1876, which is still being issued until now, twice a year in French and English. In 1969, the first issue of the magazine was published in the Arabic version next to the main magazine, due to the growing need to spread geographical knowledge of geographical research in Egypt and the Arab world.
The Egyptian Geographical Society also issues a series of geographical research, which are non-periodic publications that focus on the modern Egyptian contributions in various fields of geographical research.
The Egyptian Geographical Society owns many valuable books in both Arabic and non-Arabic languages, numbering about 30,000 volumes, in addition to scientific periodicals that reach more than 325 periodicals, university theses, historical maps, old and new, numbering more than 12,000 maps, and various atlases which are about 600. All these books where acquired by the association through a long history of continuous donations and gifts of high value from Egypt’s rulers, princes, gentlemen, and national figures among its citizens.
It is worth noting that Prof. Dr. Attia El-Tantawy participated in a panel discussion entitled: The Climate Issue from Glasgow to Sharm El-Sheikh. This event took place in the presence of Her Excellency Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, as part of the activities of the 14th day of the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership, held in June 2022, for the participation of the most prominent youth leaders from 65 countries around the world, under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic.
