Nasser Fellowship Alumni "Mumbi Ndung’u"  honoured at YES! Army Youth Energy Summit, Unveils "Beyond Privilege" Hackathon

Nairobi, Kenya: 21 June 2023 – Mumbi Ndung’u, the Chief Growth and Operations Officer at Power Learn Project, and the graduate of the first edition of the Nasser Fellowship was recently honoured with the prestigious Founders Award at the YES! Army Youth Energy Summit, presented by Dr. William Ruto, the President of Kenya. This annual award recognizes individuals who are dedicated to transforming youth development in the continent. 

Mumbi, as a co-founder of the Power Learn Project, has set an ambitious goal of training one million developers in Africa by 2027. Her commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering individuals through innovative tech training within Africa earned her this esteemed recognition. Among the seven young achievers who received this esteemed award, Mumbi stood out for her exceptional contributions.

Speaking in a panel discussion during the summit, Mumbi highlighted the organization's mission across the country while sharing the key lessons garnered from equipping learners from across Africa with future-fit skills for the energy sector. “While we push for future fit skills, the energy sector more than ever needs the support of technology to solve Africa’s problems. This can only be achieved through a collaborative effort with industry players. I am overjoyed to receive this award as it underpins the Power Learn Project’s mission of empowerment of young people and individuals through tech training.” 

On the occasion, Power Learn Project partnered with Yes! to launch the "Beyond Privilege" Hackathon. This collaborative initiative aims to foster innovation, inclusivity, and equal opportunities in the tech industry as well as the energy sector. The "Beyond Privilege" Hackathon, commencing on July 3rd, 2023, will unite a diverse pool of talent with the aim of crafting innovative solutions to real-world challenges, with a particular focus on the clean energy sector. Winning teams will gain recognition, mentorship opportunities, and resources to develop their projects further. 

“By directing resources and attention towards technological innovation, the energy sector can unlock a multitude of benefits such as the development of cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, such as renewable energy technologies,” Mumbi remarked.
